Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday opened the door ever so slightly to lowering a key interest rate in the coming months but gave no hint on the timing of a move and suggested the central bank will proceed cautiously as it continues to evaluate the impact of tariffs and other policies on the economy. In a high-profile speech closely watched at the White House and on Wall Street, Powell said that there are risks of both rising unemployment and stubbornly higher inflation. Yet he suggested that with hiring sluggish, the job market could weaken further.
Carl was stunned to learn that 7 of the 10 most federally dependent states are Republican-led. This shows we can’t just focus on national battles; we must prioritize state and local races to hold politicians accountable. President Donald Trump won’t be here forever, so we need to build strong leadership at every level.
A person familiar with the matter says the FBI is searching the Maryland home of John Bolton, who served in President Donald Trump’s first administration as national security adviser but later became critical of the president. The person wasn't authorized to discuss the investigation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press. They say the search is part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents. Messages left with a spokesperson for Bolton and the White House weren't immediately returned. A lawyer who's represented Bolton had no immediate comment Friday.

Just days away from a European deadline, Iran said Friday its foreign minister would hold a telephone conference call with his French, German and British counterparts to avoid the reimposition of United Nations sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program. The call, planned for Friday by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, comes as the three parties to Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal threaten to reimpose those sanctions under a mechanism known as “snapback” in the accord. The European Union's chief diplomat will also join the call, IRNA said.
