The Moral Midgets in the Democratic Party

Ed Morrisey tells the tale, “House Republicans offered a resolution ahead of this weekend’s memorial for Charlie Kirk condemning his assassination and honoring his public life. These kinds of resolutions usually generate little publicity and even less pushback, as these measures do nothing more than express sentiment rather than legislate in any way…. fewer than half of House Democrats cast an aye for the Kirk resolution….” As if that alone was not bad enough, AOC took to the floor of the House later in the day to ‘splain herself – it’s horrifying.

AOC’s “argument” (air quotes because it really does not qualify as an argument) is, essentially, that the murder was bad and immoral and condemnable, but that does not mean we can just brush aside all the bad things Republicans have done.  Simply put, she establishes a moral equivalence between the assassination of Charlie Kirk and stating, for example, that transgenderism is a mental illness rather than just another lifestyle choice.  Murder = “hurtful” speech in the AOC moral code.  “Sticks and stones can break your bones – words too,” to paraphrase.

Let’s be very clear here – she is equating emotional harm, intended or merely perceived, to actual physical harm.  Calling someone a name is the same as hitting them.  Giving a speech in which you use the name repeatedly, well that’s like shooting them.  It’d be funny if someone had not just died based on such thinking.

Right after the shooting I wrote that this was a matter of right-and-wrong, and transcended politics.  A couple of days ago, I wrote about how perverse was the understanding of love and hate among those attempting to justify the shooting or sympathize with the shooter.  Now from AOC comes something entirely different – it’s not just wrong, its not just perverse – it is achingly idiotic, and yet, deeply disturbing.  It is clinging to an ideological stance far beyond reason and trying desperately to make it sound reasonable and in so doing giving license to moral idiocy.

I find the despair and sadness I have been experiencing since the Kirk shooting rapidly transmogrifying into anger.  The trolls on the internet being so morally challenged is something we have to live with.  But that such moral vacancy exists in the House of Representatives – let alone takes to the floor to display that vacancy for the world to see makes me want to tear through the place like Jesus tore through the vendors at the temple.

Democrats have been wrong.  Some of them are socialists.  Many of them are authoritarian.  But I have always thought them motivated by trying to do good.  I am not sure I can anymore.  Right now, at least the ones that refused to vote for the resolution and that gave AOC their voice just look like moral midgets.  A man was shot in cold blood for crying out loud!
